Conference Blockchain Unbound was held nearly six months after Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Rico, leaving devastating aftermath behind. Consequences are still to be felt, and the best illustration for them is the fact that almost one third of the citizens still do not have access to the regular electricity. Therefore, the Government of Commonwealth of Puerto Rico sees Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies as a strategy towards the recovery of the stumbling economy.

The conference was designed to showcase Puerto Rico as the preeminent destination for companies, entrepreneurs, and investors building the blockchain technologies that will shape the future. But also to highlight the recovery of the devastated areas, therefore all profits from the conference were donated to a select group of local charities that are helping the Puerto Rican people recover from the devastating hurricanes that struck the island in 2017. Conference participants were invited to spend a day, working with local non-profit organizations and to visit the hardest hit areas of Puerto Rico and deliver aid to those who need it most.

Patrick Moynihan, the CEO of Blockchain Industries, said blockchain is not merely a technology, it is a movement led by individuals who not only want to boost their bottom lines but also make a difference. “This is really about awareness, here’s a social movement here. People want to help, and this is a way to really give back to their fellow citizens across the globe, quite frankly, and equalize the playing field”.
